Short answer: A fresher data analyst resume should be one page, with five sections in this order: a two-line summary naming the role you want, a skills section grouped by tool, two or three projects written as problem, method and result, education, and certifications. Projects matter most, because a fresher has no work history to prove skills. Write each project bullet with the tool you used and a concrete result, use the exact skill words from the job post, and link every project to something an interviewer can open.
This guide is for students and freshers applying for data analyst, MIS analyst, reporting analyst and junior Power BI roles. It shows the layout to use, how to turn a project into strong bullet points, a sample resume, and the mistakes that get resumes rejected before a person reads them.
The one-page layout that works
| Section | What goes in it | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Name, city, phone, professional email, LinkedIn, portfolio or GitHub link | 2 lines |
| Summary | The role you want, your strongest tools, and one proof point | 2 lines |
| Skills | Grouped: Data (SQL, Excel), BI (Power BI, Tableau), Programming (Python), Concepts | 4 lines |
| Projects | 2 or 3 projects, each with 2 or 3 bullets and a link | Half the page |
| Education | Degree, college, year; marks only if strong | 2–3 lines |
| Certifications and training | Completed certifications and courses, with month and year | 2–3 lines |
Leave out photo, date of birth, father’s name, marital status and a list of hobbies. They take space and do not help an analyst application.
How to write project bullets that get interviews
Use this formula for every bullet: action verb + what you did + tool + result. The result is what most freshers forget, and it is what makes a recruiter stop.
| Weak bullet | Strong bullet |
|---|---|
| Made a sales dashboard in Power BI. | Built a Power BI sales dashboard from 12 months of order data (48,000 rows), with DAX measures for revenue vs target and month-over-month growth. |
| Did SQL queries on a database. | Answered 10 business questions with SQL on a 4-table retail database, using joins, CTEs and window functions such as RANK and LAG. |
| Cleaned data using Python. | Cleaned a public dataset of 20,000 records in Python (pandas): removed 1,150 duplicates, standardised city names and fixed date formats. |
| Analysed customer data. | Segmented customers by recency, frequency and spend in SQL, and found that one segment accounted for most repeat purchases. |
Use your real numbers: the actual row count, the number of questions you answered, the duplicates you removed. Never invent a result or a business impact. Interviewers ask about every number on your resume.

Make it pass applicant tracking systems
Many companies filter resumes with software before a recruiter reads them. Keep it readable by both:
- Mirror the job post’s words. If the post says “Power BI” and “DAX”, write exactly those, not “BI tools”.
- Use a simple layout. One column, standard headings (Skills, Projects, Education), no text inside images or tables.
- Save as PDF unless the employer asks for Word, and name the file clearly, for example
Priya-S-Data-Analyst-Resume.pdf. - Tailor for each role. Reorder skills and projects so the most relevant ones come first. It takes ten minutes per application and is worth it.
Your portfolio links matter as much as the resume
- GitHub: one repository per project with a README: the question, data source, steps, key findings and screenshots.
- Dashboards: screenshots in the README, or a public link for Tableau Public work using public data only.
- LinkedIn: the same headline as your resume summary, your projects in the Featured section, and the skills you list on the resume.
Mistakes that get fresher resumes rejected
- Listing tools you cannot use in an interview. Every tool on the page is a possible question.
- Skill ratings out of 10 or star bars. They mean nothing to a recruiter and confuse tracking software.
- Tutorial projects copied as they are. Change the dataset or the questions so the work is yours, and say what you changed.
- No links. A project without a link is hard to believe.
- Two pages for a fresher. Cut to one page; the extra page is rarely read.
- An objective line about yourself instead of the role. “Seeking a challenging position” says nothing; name the role and your proof.
Resume and interview preparation at ASTI
ASTI’s Data Analytics course ends with real-world projects, resume preparation and mock interviews, after modules in statistics, Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI and Python. It runs for about four months in the classroom at BTM 1st Stage, Bangalore, or live online. Fees start from ₹15,000 depending on the course and training option, with EMI available. Placement assistance does not guarantee a job.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a fresher data analyst resume be?
One page. Recruiters scan resumes quickly, and a fresher rarely has enough relevant material to fill two pages well.
What if I have no internship or work experience?
Lead with projects. Two or three finished projects with links, real numbers and clear write-ups do the job that work experience does for others.
Should I include my course certificate?
Yes, under Certifications and Training, with the institute name and year. A recognised exam such as Microsoft PL-300 is worth listing if you have passed it.
Do I need a different resume for Power BI roles?
Use the same resume but tailor it: put your Power BI project first, and list Power Query, data modelling and DAX explicitly in the skills section.
Can a non-IT graduate get shortlisted?
Yes. Put your skills and projects above your education so the recruiter sees your data work first, and mention domain knowledge from your degree, such as finance or commerce, where it fits the role.
