See batch timingsAWS DevOps is the practice of using Amazon Web Services together with DevOps methods and tools to build, test, release and run software automatically. Teams keep code in Git, use CI/CD pipelines (for example Jenkins or AWS CodePipeline) to build and test every change, package applications in Docker containers, create infrastructure from code, and monitor everything with services such as Amazon CloudWatch.
Three terms that are often mixed up. Here is how they relate.
Where applications run.
Amazon Web Services is a cloud platform that rents out servers (EC2), storage (S3), networking (VPC), databases and more, on demand, instead of buying hardware.
How software is delivered.
A culture and set of practices that brings development and operations together, automating build, test, release and monitoring so changes ship faster and more safely.
DevOps practices, run on AWS.

Terraform is not listed in the published AWS DevOps syllabus. Infrastructure as code is taught with AWS CloudFormation, and configuration management with Ansible. Ask a career advisor whether Terraform is covered in your batch.
About this syllabus: topics come from the AWS DevOps syllabus PDF, the current AWS DevOps course page, and the DevOps and AWS course pages on ascentcourses.com, grouped here into 12 modules. The "you practise" examples describe typical lab exercises.
DevOps on AWS relies on a core set of services: IAM for access, EC2, EBS and S3 for compute and storage, VPC, ELB and Auto Scaling for networking and availability, CloudFormation for infrastructure as code, the Code* tools, ECS and EKS for delivery and containers, and CloudWatch for monitoring.
| AWS service | What it does | Why DevOps uses it |
|---|---|---|
| IAMIdentity and Access Management | Controls who can access which AWS resources, using users, groups, roles and policies. | Gives pipelines, servers and people only the permissions they need (least privilege), without sharing passwords. |
| EC2Elastic Compute Cloud | Virtual servers in the cloud, sized and priced to the workload. | Hosts applications, Jenkins servers and build agents. |
| EBSElastic Block Store | Disk volumes attached to EC2 instances, with snapshots. | Persistent storage and backups for servers. |
| S3Simple Storage Service | Highly durable object storage for files of any size. | Stores build artifacts, logs, backups and static website files. |
| VPCVirtual Private Cloud | Your own isolated network with subnets, route tables, security groups and NACLs. | Separates application tiers and controls which traffic is allowed. |
| ELBElastic Load Balancing | Spreads incoming traffic across healthy servers or containers. | Makes rolling and blue-green deployments possible without downtime. |
| Auto ScalingEC2 Auto Scaling | Adds or removes EC2 instances automatically based on demand. | Handles traffic spikes and replaces failed servers without manual work. |
| CloudFormationAWS CloudFormation | Creates and updates AWS resources from templates. | Infrastructure as code: repeatable, version-controlled environments. |
| CodePipeline · CodeBuild · CodeDeployAWS developer tools | Managed services for pipelines, builds and deployments. | CI/CD on AWS without running your own build servers. |
| ECS & FargateElastic Container Service | Runs Docker containers; Fargate removes the need to manage servers. | A simple way to deploy and scale containerised apps. |
| EKSElastic Kubernetes Service | Managed Kubernetes control plane on AWS. | Runs microservices at scale with rollouts, rollbacks and autoscaling. |
| LambdaAWS Lambda | Runs code without servers, triggered by events. | Event-driven automation and small tasks around pipelines. |
| CloudWatchAmazon CloudWatch | Collects metrics and logs, shows dashboards and raises alarms. | Spots problems early and alerts the team before users notice. |
| Systems ManagerAWS Systems Manager | Runs commands, patches servers and stores configuration parameters. | Manages fleets of servers and keeps settings and secrets out of code. |
| KMSKey Management Service | Creates and controls encryption keys. | Encrypts data and secrets used by applications and pipelines. |
Services listed are those named in the course syllabi. Descriptions are general AWS knowledge. Ascent Software Training Institute is not affiliated with Amazon Web Services; AWS service names are used only to describe the training.
